When is Endodontic Treatment Necessary?
When a tooth’s root is decayed or damaged due to trauma, it can become inflamed. If the tooth is still alive, endodontic treatment becomes essential. Each tooth root contains several canals filled with nerves and tissues. If these are inflamed due to bacteria infiltrating the root, the tissues get damaged and typically cause pain, especially when in contact with hot or cold foods and drinks. Even a touch can be painful. During treatment, the inflamed tissue is meticulously cleaned out to preserve the tooth and prevent its loss.
How is Root Canal Treatment Performed?
Endodontic treatment involves removing the infected pulp tissue inside the tooth. Initially, an X-ray is taken to determine the tooth’s structure. Then, access is made to the root canals to clean the infection. The damaged pulp is removed, and the canals are shaped for filling. Sterilization eliminates microbes. The canals are filled with a filling material, and the procedure is confirmed with an X-ray, completing the treatment.
How Long Does Endodontic Treatment Take?
The duration of endodontic treatment depends on various factors such as the tooth’s location, the number of canals, and the state of the infection. If there is no infection or cyst in the pulp, the treatment can be completed in one session. However, if the tooth is infected, two sessions may be required. Each session can last up to 45 minutes. In the first session, the tooth canal is carefully cleaned and shaped. If there is no sign of infection in the second session, the treatment is completed with a filling.
How Many Sessions Does Endodontic Treatment Take?
Endodontic treatment typically can be completed in a single session, but sometimes two sessions are necessary. If the infection is widespread, the treatment process can extend to three sessions. The dentist determines the intervals between sessions. If the treatment concludes in one session, the entire process can take between one to one and a half hours, depending on the complexity of the treatment and the extent of the infection spread.
